GSM based telemetry modules for remote monitoring via SMS or GPRS

These can be used to remotely monitor almost anything at a remote site and send an SMS to a cellphone or central base unit or, via GPRS, real-time data.

Provides the user with a simple SMS command to retrieve STATUS at any site.

  • Pressure - HIGH/LOW pressure, no pressure
  • Water Flow - flow rate HIGH/LOW, no flow
  • Temperature - HIGH/LOW alarms
  • Liquid Levels - HIGH/LOW alarms
  • Security Systems - unauthorised entry, smoke detction, PIR input(s)
  • Generator Systems - power failure, low fuel, battery voltage LOW, start lock-out
  • Irrigation Pumps - monitor levels and turn pumps ON/OFF automatically, even when pump and dam are kilometers apart.
  • Computer Rooms - humidity, temperature, under-floor moisture, power failure
  • Radio High-Sites - battery voltage, incoming supply voltage, generator operation
  • Air Conditioning plants - alarm conditions of temperature and switching of standby systems
  • etc. etc. - this list of possibilities are endless

The range of GSM/SMS and GSM/GPRS modules for telemetry monitoring include the entry level 5x2 (shown above) which has 5-inputs (contact closure, digital and 2-analog) and 2-outputs (TTL low power).

SMS data is sent throught to either a stand-alone cellphone or a monitoring base station (PC with GSM modem), via GSM technology.

Text messages are user programmable and the unit can send up to 6 unique numbers using three SMSC numbers (ISP's).

Text messages (up to 35-characters), for alarm and normal conditions, can be programmed without any common text - i.e. not just Water Pressure LOW/HIGH but LOW water pressure detected and Water Pressure Normal.

SMS messages include the physical location (up to 80-characters), and not just the mobile number, making it easy to determine where the message is coming from. This is useful for multiple sites and new standby personnel:

Low water pressure detected at #16 Park Road, Durban. Phone the service technician on +2731-260-8000

Where the RED TEXT is the pre-defined text of the alarm condition and the GREEN TEXT is the common pre-defined text of the location

The unit is also capable of sending its own power condition from the standby battery.

Output switching is password protected (user definable password) and simple SMS commands such as "password OP2" are used to switch output ON/OFF/PULSE - where the time of the pulsed outputs are user defined in length of pulse - 1 - 65000 seconds for each output separately. Output SMS confirmation messages are each user defined as "Output-1 ON" or "Compressor Started".

For GPRS use live data can also be sent throught to a monitoring base station via GPRS technology, using a dedicated (static) IP address, and the subscription to an APN (access point name). APN rental from a service provider is cheap as is the very low cost data transfer fees charged by our local Vodacom and MTN GSM networks.

Also see the Inventia MT series on the industrial GPRS page.

This unit functions by either sending SMS status messages to a pre-programmed number (1-5) or GPRS data through an APN.

All that is required is a data SIM card. This can be as little as R25.00/month.
