Moduteq Fiber - a fiber optic system for perimeter detection and alarm

Moduteq Control Unit

The MODUTEQ FIBER DETECTION SYSTEM is a fibre optic based detection system that makes use of a transmitter (laser source), detection module and processor to sense deflection in an optical fibre cable to raise an alarm.

The optical fibre cable can be attached to a structure or buried underground. Any event that then causes the optical fibre to deflect such as deflection of a physical barrier (palisade, wire mesh or fence) or stepping on the cable when buried, will cause the detection system to generate an alarm.

MODUTEQ FIBER DETECTION SYSTEM  is a high-tech perimeter security solution that enables you to know about an intruder before he gets to you.

This very effective perimeter technology uses fibre optic cable as the medium for detection.   Any deflection in the cable is reported by the control unit.

IT IS OFTEN PROVEN TODAY THAT DETECTING AN INTRUDER ONCE THEY ARE IN YOUR PROPERTY IS TOO LATE

Previous methods of perimeter detection either has a low probability of detection, high nuisance alarm rate, high maintenance or high installation cost.

Often most solutions available have a combination of the above problems.

Alarms reported by other detection  systems are often caused  the environment and regarded as false alarms.

The MODUTEQ FIBER DETECTION SYSTEM unit also has a unique feature to do automatic analysis of the environment.

After analysis of the environment and typical alarm conditions the unit will automatically determine detection parameters.

The optical fiber cable can be attached to a structure or buried in the ground to detect deflection by an intrusion.A strong feature of the MODUTEQ FIBER DETECTION SYSTEM is that the alarm processing software will reject environment conditions such as changes in temperature and disturbances caused by wind and rain.

Detection parameters can be set to achieve the best balance between probability of detection and false alarms.   This process is achieved through an automatic learning function.

Features:

  • Menu driven LCD display makes the module easy to set up and use
  • Uses fibre optic detection to sense/detect intrusions
  • Rejects environmental conditions such as changes in temperatures and disturbances caused by wind and rain
  • Detection parameters are calculated by the module, based on background noise and alarm conditions presented to the module during set-up. In this way the best balance between probability of detection and false alarms is ensured
  • Uses sophisticated signal filtering algorithms to determine whether or not a disturbance detected is caused by human intrusion
  • Can generate alarm or maintenance outputs
  • Interfacing mechanism provides for stand-alone operation
  • Can be used under different configurations to protect various structures
  • Built-in diagnostics makes fault finding easy

The MODUTEQ FIBER DETECTION SYSTEM is available in the following two configurations.

STAND-ALONE

In stand-alone mode the MODUTEQ FIBER DETECTION SYSTEM operates independently and provides an alarm indication by means of a potential free relay contact.   The user interface is completed through a liquid crystal display (LCD).   Diagnostic information is reflected on the LCD, while operating parameters and diagnostic modes are adjustable through a touchpad connected to the LCD.

NETWORKED

In a networked mode, the fiber detection unit is connected to the Moduteq perimeter network, usually deployed where the perimeter is more than 600 meters.   The Moduteq network and other Moduteq detection technologies have been successfully utilised on many sites including several international applications.   This configuration offers the user expandability and versatility in his application of various detection methods and monitoring devices.

The versatility of the application of MODUTEQ FIBER DETECTION SYSTEM  enables this solution to be applied to protect almost any perimeter.

UNDERGROUND

A trench is used to bury the fiber optic detection cable underground.   The cable is installed at a depth of between 50mm and 200mm, depending on the application.   Coarse river sand (non-compacting) is used 50mm below and above the cable for bedding.   The width of the trench and pattern of the cable depends on the area of coverage required.   Detection can also be achieved under carpets and under tiles.

STRUCTURE PROTECTION

The fibre optic detection cable can be used to protect various structures (such as palisade fencing, suitable wire mesh fencing and pre-fabricated walling).   Suitable structures must be rigid enough to ensure that deflections caused by environmental conditions to which the structure is exposed (such as wind) are not excessive.   When attaching the detection cable to the structure to be protected, a method must be used that will ensure that:

  • Relative movement between the structure and detection cable is kept to a minimum.
  • Points of attachment do not introduce localized points of stress on the detection cable.
  • Minimum bending radius as prescribed y the cable manufacturer is not exceeded.
